Depression

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest accompanied by somatic and cognitive changes that affects a person’s ability to function. Depression affects about 280 million people globally and is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Without proper treatment depression can get severe and lead to self harm or suicide.

  • social withdrawal
  • anxiety and restlessness
  • feelings of sadness, emptiness and hopelessness
  • loss of interest in things that used to excite you
  • having difficulties in concentrating
  • loss of appetite or increased appetite and cravings
  • fixation on past failures and feelings of guilt
  • tiredness that even doing daily tasks would be hard
  • insomnia or sleeping too much
  • easily irritable and angry outbursts
  • slowed thinking or body movements

If you suspect that you are depressed, make an appointment with a doctor or a mental health practitioner. If you are not in a position to see a professional, you can talk to a friend, a pastor, a family member or someone you trust. If your loved ones are having suicidal thoughts you need to stay and supervise them at all times, remove any harmful objects near them and take them to any mental facility near you.
